HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Parents,
Happy new year! Welcome back to a new term, which we hope will be a hard working term full of learning.
We will be studying World War II as our main topic this term and this will provide the context for much of our learning in all curricular areas. The children will undertake the topic through a story based approach  in which they will become a wartime character and they will learn about the events of WWII as the story progresses. They will work in ‘families’ and will make decisions, discuss and tackle dilemmas and have fun learning, hopefully!
In maths we will finish our unit on time firstly. Then the following areas will be covered: angles, 2D shape, fractions, position and movement and percentages. More detailed learning intentions will appear in your child’s learning log on a weekly basis. There will be links to websites on the p6/7 blog which will give further practice.  There will be a focus on times tables and quick recall of mental maths facts throughout the term.
In writing we will focus on some historical writing about WW2 such as diaries, letters and newspaper reports. We will start the term with some work on describing settings. We will continue the class spelling list with individuals setting targets, In addition to this everyone will have extra words to learn in a spelling challenge.  It is expected that all handwriting should be neatly presented and hopefully in joined script and lessons will continue to practise this.  There will be a focus on punctuation  e.g. semicolons and colons. We will also be improving our dictionary skills and working with making use of a thesaurus in our writing.
In RME we will be looking at Judaism as this fits in with the WWII theme.  In ICT we will discuss and learn about ’safe and appropriate conduct’ on the internet, so important in the advent of a virtual world.  We will also practise our touch typing. In French we will consolidate numbers, dates, weather as well as discussing ‘my house’ and ‘the town’.
As you can see we will have a busy and hopefully productive term. Please be sure to be in touch if you have any questions, queries or worries; pop in or give me a ring at the school.

Kind regards,

F Reid
